Are we who we cite? : on epistemological injustices, citing practices, and #metoo in academia

The #metoo movement reaching academia and Applied Linguistics creates a need for discussion on how we as scholars react to oppressive ideologies and behaviors in our community. However, this is not merely a question of processing cases of sexual harassment and assault. More deeply, we need conversations on who we do and do not know, read, and cite, and how to make our field more epistemologically equitable. Politics in play: the playground movement as a socio-political issue in early twentieth-century Finland

This article studies the history of playgrounds in Finland and focuses on the emergence and implementation of the objectives of the international playground movement in the early twentieth century. Specifically, it examines the relations between supervised playgrounds, women’s emancipation, child welfare policies, and political discussion on social class. In doing so, the article illustrates the transnational circulation and implementation of early twentieth century “child-saving” ideas, such as the playground reform. The focus is on the contesting representations constructed in various discourses by various participants of newspaper texts. The data consists of 1204 news and other journalistic items collected from nine Finnish national and regional newspapers between 1995 and 2000.
